STEM - making sycamore seed helicopters

We have been learning about seed dispersal in various plants.

We focused on sycamore seeds which have a wing. When the seed drops off the tree it spins, slowing down in descent. If caught by the wind the seed will be carried away from the parent plant, reducing competition for nutrients, water and light. ... This disperses the seeds away from the parent plant.

TASK -

  • make a model sycamore seed and test to see if will fly.
  • modify your design changing weight and length of wing.
  • test again to see which design takes the longest time to reach the ground.
