Stormont Visit 2024

On Wednesday 28th May the School Council had their annual visit to Stormont.  Philip Mc Guigan MLA welcomed us to the building.  He invited us into his meeting in the Blue Chamber and then he came up to the Education Classroom, with us, to tell us about his work and answer our questions.  After we found out lots of information about the NI Assembly.  Visit www.niassembly.gov.uk to find out all the information about opening times if you would like to visit.  Finally we had lunch and some fun in the park!

Eco Book Swap Day

On Thursday 14th March,  we had our first ever 'Eco Book Swap Day'.  It was a great success!  126 children travelled actively to school and many more brought a book to swap in our 'Book Swap Shop'.   Everyone was very excited to pick a new book and by swapping books we are learning to be more sustainable, reducing waste and saving trees.  The Eco Council, as usual, worked hard getting everything ready.  Well done everyone!

The Wastebusters Tour

A big thank you to the Lyric Theatre who brought their new ‘Eco Musical’ to our P3-5 classes. We loved the show and some P5 children have written a recount of the show for you…..

On Tuesday 12th March P3, P4 and P5 classes watched an Eco – Musical performed by the Lyric Theatre. The show taught us how to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle our waste.

The musical was about a girl called Ella.  Ella was wasting a lot and I mean a lot, but the Wastebusters came and told her how much she was wasting.  Then they told her what to do to help like take a shorter shower, bring a water bottle to refill, get a lunch box that you can use everyday,  recycle paper, put things in the right bin and not use plastic bags.

The musical was very enjoyable and we loved it.  We learned to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

The musical was about a girl called Ella.  The Wastebusters came to bring Ella back in time to see if they can get a no waste day.

They told her to have one less minute in the shower, to get a plastic bottle and lunch box because she could refill them.  They also told her to use the right bin for recycling.

It was brilliant and we learned to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Energy Saving Challenge results

Well done to ALL those families who took part.  You have saved lots of carbon from being emitted into our environment.

Remember 'wee changes make big differences'.

Energy Saving Week

The Eco Council challenged us all to take part in the 'Energy Saving Trust's schools challenge last week.  We had to:

  • Turn the thermostat down by 1 degree.
  • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.
  • Unplug any electrical items you're not using.
  • Reduce your shower time by 1 minute.
  • Turn off the lights when you leave the room.

Concern

Today we gave the ladies from Concern a cheque for £400 which we raised by completing the Daily Mile in our Christmas Jumpers.  Some of us got very wet but it was well worth it!

Well done everyone!

Home grown potatotes

Gardening Club dug their potatoes today.  I wonder what will be for dinner tonight - mash, chips, or roasties?

Healthy Eating

Today the Eco Council had the opportunity to meet with Mrs Farnan, a nurse and mother in our school.  She taught us about the healthy plate and about sugar in out diet.  The sugar content in some of our favourite treats really shocked us.  Thanks Mrs Farnan!

New School Council training

Today School Council discussed what a 'good' school would look like and completed a negotiating task - they decided it was hard work!

Meet our New School Council and P4 Eco Councillors

Bike to School Week

Eco Council held an assembly today to encourage everyone to take part in Bike to School Week.  Biking to school is good exercise, will save you money, means less cars in the carpark and gets your brain ready to learn.  Try to join in.

Green Flag Award

On Wednesday 15th June, the P7 Eco Councillors were at the Causeway Coast and Glen Grren Flag award ceremony to collect our school's 5th Green Flag.  Well done to everyone in St. Patrick's and St. Brigid's for doing their bit to look after our school and our world by walking to school, saving energy and looking after our oceans.

School Council Trip to Stormont

On Tuesday 31st May, St Patrick’s and St Brigid’s School Council went on a day trip to Stormont.  We had a fantastic day.

Mrs Mc Auley and Mrs Farnan went with us on the bus and when we arrived our tour guide was called Mrs Anne-Marie Fleming.  She took us into the Blue Chamber where we had our own debate about homework. The debate went very well.  Most people voted for no homework.  Then we put forward our own ideas for debates.  We watched a powerpoint about MLAs and School Councils and discovered how similiar they are. We learned that MLAs get elected just the same as School Councillors. Mlas make laws to make Northern Ireland better and that School Councillors make rules to make schools better. We found out that they had to cover the Stormont building in WW2 with tar and cow dung and that they covered the roads with green ash. We then went into the Red Chamber, it had very comfortable chairs. We heard about the boxes from WW2 and how that they had lost the keys and weren’t able to find them.  We then saw the lucky linen wall that was destroyed by people rubbing it to give them good luck. The celling had pictures of Northern Irelands most common jobs. The jobs were farming, ship building and linen.

Afterwards we went to the gift shop. We bought many amazing items such as soap, highlighters, pencils, chocolate bars, scones , caramel squares , key rings and fridge magnets. There was a lovely view from the windows in the gift shop. Outside there were six pillars to represent the six counties.

Finally we went to the park, it was beside a forest.  It had ziplines, trampolines, swings and slides.  It was amazing!

Energy Assembly  - Switch OFF Fortnight

Well done to the Eco Council who launched 'Switch Off Fortnight' today at both the P1-3 assembly and P4-7 assembly.  The Eco Council presented a powerpoint to their peers about electricity, how it affects global warming in our world and the data they have gathered over the past fortnight.

They encouraged the school community to be aware of their use of electricity over the next fortnight and to:

Switch off the lights when you leave the room

Switch off the whiteboard when you have finished

Switch off all the sockets at the end of the day

You to can 'Switch Off' to save energy!

Ditch the Dark 2021

Well done to the 133 pupils and their parents who braved the horrible conditions this morning and walked, scooted or cycled to school.

Watch out for 'The Journey to Santa' coming soon.

Well done to our School Council who had a Teams meeting today (12th May 2021) with the Stormont Education Officer.  Lots of information to learn about the NI Assembly and some fantastic questions!
